His artistic executant was Frieda, Lady Harris (1877-1962), who painted the cards in the early years of World War II, from 1938 to 1942. Lady Harris had to paint several versions of some cards before Crowley approved them. Although she knew little about Tarot or its symbolism, her artistic genius brought Crowley’s visions and designs to life.
The resulting deck succeeds in expressing his esoteric ideas and teachings, making them intuitively accessible to everyone. They first appeared in Crowley’s last masterwork, The Book of Thoth (1944), and were first published as a set of printed cards in 1971.
