Divination illuminates the darkness. For centuries, people have turned to fortune tellers, soothsayers, seers, and mediums for guidance in troubled times. People have learned how to interpret oracles for themselves, seeking deeper meaning in the midst of daily chaos. These cards are a part of that lineage. Italian author Luigi Pirandello wrote, “Life is full of infinite absurdities, which, strangely enough, do not even need to appear plausible, since they are true.” Tarot tells the truth, plausible or implausible, and helps us distill understand from life’s absurdities.

In this deck figures appear like dancers moving across a darkened stage, flashing into illumination as they stop into the spotlight. Or perhaps they are like actors on a dark stage-the lights come up suddenly, a scene is revealed, the meaning comprehended, and then darkness falls again.

Tarot cards are like that too-a flash of insight, a sudden revelation, a glimpse of meaning. Maybe we can’t grasp life’s infinite absurdities, but bit by bit we can recognise their truths-even if we’re just dancing in the dark.
