A great scholar on divining, Waite was unsatisfied with both the traditional tarot as well as the Egyptian-style version used by the Golden Dawn. He therefore decided to create a new deck based on his own personal esoteric studies. He entrusted the graphics to a young American artist recently affiliated with the order, Pamela Colman Smith, sure that she would have been able to produce an artistically pleasing deck and even more important, a deck with a symbolic weight that would make it one of the greatest esoteric creations.
